What's really amazing -- if you read the Egan piece, then the Wall Street Journal interview, and then decide to take a look at the Speakeasy article "How Do You Write a Great Work of Fiction? Jennifer Egan Explains the Steps" because how-to articles are always interesting, right? She's written 5 works of fictions -- noir detective, gothic, and this experimental piece (they didn't mention whether the other two were genre). And for steps? Well... writing fiction should apparently be done in a gingham easy chair from Ikea, with a lap desk and legal pads. With cats. and... um? I think maybe process doesn't mean what she thinks it does? Amusing, but I wouldn't recommend it as laying out steps, exactly?Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01422171964652699673noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4940224740718934743.post-9520352884402428822011-04-24T21:14:45.948-04:002011-04-24T21:14:45.948-04:00Pam, I agree that the authors should be able to do...Pam, I agree that the authors should be able to do one or the other. However, I also think the publishers have a responsibility to fact check non-fiction offerings. This is especially true when the publisher has, like Penguin, had a number of these sorts of "oopsies". The very fact they can have an editor say with a straight face that they rely on their authors to fact check just stuns me.Amanda Greenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02927312739323222344noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4940224740718934743.post-58154953659594192992011-04-24T21:12:38.802-04:002011-04-24T21:12:38.802-04:00Jim, thanks. Er...Congrats Amanda!

I'll be picking up ....

Err....does ordering count as picking up?

Errr...Ordering Nocturnal Origins soon. I may wait for it to hit Barnes and Noble first, but I'll definitely be picking it up.

Jennifer Egan's comments about genre fiction are to be expected. She writes "literature" and is arrogant. That's nothing new.

As far as plagiarism goes, that's the new "in" thing. Didn't you hear about Axolotl Roadkill?

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/12/world/europe/12germany.htmlJim McCoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12524898692671838600noreply@blogger.com
