Twas the week before Christmas . . .

. . . and we're all running around trying to meet deadlines, do shopping, prepare for days of cooking, family, and who knows what else. (Just to prove the insanity of the season has hit me, it's 0830 and I've already been out to gas up the car, drop clothes off at the cleaners and have gone grocery shopping. All on only half a cup of coffee.) So we're going to throw the doors open today. You can ask any writing or publishing industry-related questions you might have. If you have an opening paragraph or two you want quick critiques on, put 'em up. The rest of us will do drive-by responses and critiques. Also, remember, if you put something up for critique, anyone can say whether it grabs them or not and why.

The floor is now yours!

I got nothin'.

How 'bout them Yankees?

How about the best line you've written recently? Here's mine.

The dead dinosaurs and the camera man’s self-filmed demise were a real hit on the Evening News.

Well, Yankees suck for one. :D

Got nothing really. I have a script that's worming it's way through my head. I'm doing research for my next short, and I was in the office at 5:45 AM today to work a few hours so my brain is mush anyways.

LOL, Matapam. Is it the first line for a story?

C Kelsey,

I was up till 2am in the emergency ward of the hospital with son aged 20. Nothing too serious.

Had 6 hours sleep. Should be fine for the rest of the day!

Meant to add, Brain also feels like mush!

David, all I can say is if we (the Rangers) had to lose Cliff Lee, I'm glad it wasn't to the Yankees ;-)

Pam, I'll see your one line and raise you a paragraph:

Not that Granny and the others really ate. Oh, they went through the motions, but it was more habit I think than anything else. They're dead, after all, so they don't need sustenance. Still, it's mighty disconcerting sitting at the kitchen table with folks who ought to be six feet under.

They'd passed, but not passed on.

Chris K, yes, the Yankees suck. As I told David, glad they didn't get Cliff Lee. As for mush for brains, that's what you get for going into work so early on a Saturday.

Rowena, I'm so sorry to hear about your son. I hope everything's all right now.

Roweena, it's the last line of a rather active and gory chapter. I'll have to keep it - or something of the sort - in mind for an opening line.

Amanda, more, more!

quick skimming... why do I have this image of a zombie pulling back in horror, gummy mouth working, shrieking, "Mush? I want BRAINZ!"

Rowena,

I'm sorry to hear about your son. I hope everything's okay.
